What to Pack for Japan: A Season-by-Season Guide

Published 9 March 2026 by the Packster team

Japan has four genuinely different seasons and a set of practical packing rules unique to the country. Here's what to pack for each season — and what Japan specifically requires.

Japan is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world and one with a distinctly four-season climate. Spring and autumn (the most visited periods) are mild and comfortable. Summer is hot, humid, and rainy. Winter can be cold to very cold depending on region. Beyond climate, Japan also has a number of specific practical requirements that shape a good packing list.

Japan-Specific Packing Rules

Before addressing season, there are several Japan-specific requirements that apply year-round to any visit.

  • Slip-on shoes are essential — Japan requires removing shoes at traditional restaurants, ryokan (traditional inns), many temples, and some cultural sites. Laced boots and trainers become a genuine inconvenience. Loafers, slip-on trainers, or easy-to-remove footwear saves significant time.
  • Clean socks matter — you will remove your shoes repeatedly; ensure you have clean, hole-free socks every day
  • Comfortable footwear above all else — Japan is a high-walking destination; most people walk 15,000–25,000 steps per day in Tokyo. Comfortable footwear is more important here than in almost any other city.
  • Cash — Japan remains heavily cash-based; many restaurants, temples, and smaller shops don't accept cards

Spring (March–May): Cherry Blossom Season

Spring is Japan's most popular season — sakura season draws enormous visitor numbers in late March and April. Temperatures range from cool to warm (10–22°C). Light layers and a versatile mid-season wardrobe are ideal.

  • 2–3 t-shirts or light tops
  • 1–2 long-sleeve shirts (for cooler days and evenings)
  • 1 light jacket or mid-layer
  • Light waterproof jacket (April rain is common)
  • 2 pairs of casual trousers or jeans
  • 1 smart outfit for nice restaurants (Tokyo has many reservation-required restaurants)
  • Comfortable slip-on walking shoes

Summer (June–August): Hot, Humid, and Rainy

Japanese summer is genuinely hot and humid (30–37°C in July–August in Tokyo and Osaka, with high humidity). June is rainy season. Pack for comfort in heat and regular rain.

  • Lightweight, quick-dry clothing (synthetics or linen — avoid cotton)
  • A compact folding umbrella (July rain is daily; also used as sun parasol)
  • SPF 50+ sunscreen (UV index in Japan's summer is extreme)
  • Cooling towel (widely used in Japan in summer)
  • Light cardigan or layer for air conditioning (indoor cooling is aggressive)

Autumn (September–November): Peak Season

Autumn rivals spring for Japan's best travel season — comfortable temperatures (15–25°C), lower humidity, and spectacular koyo (autumn leaves) from October. Similar packing to spring with slightly warmer layers for November.

  • Light-to-medium layers (similar to spring)
  • A warmer mid-layer for November evenings
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Camera — autumn colours are exceptional in Kyoto, Nikko, and Tokyo parks

Winter (December–February): Cold and Clear

Tokyo winters are cold (3–10°C) but clear and dry. Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps are full ski country in winter. Kyoto and Osaka are similar to Tokyo. Pack for cold city exploration.

  • Warm coat (not a ski jacket — Tokyo restaurants and indoor spaces are well-heated)
  • Warm layers (thermal base layer for particularly cold days)
  • Warm hat, gloves, and scarf
  • Warm, comfortable walking shoes or boots
  • Hand warmers (kairo) — available in Japanese convenience stores, but worth packing a few
